changes name to vertical communications
Adjustment
reflects broader corporate strategy demonstrated by recent Vertical Networks acquisition
Cambridge, Mass. (January 11, 2005) --Artisoft,
Inc. (ASFTE.OB), a leading provider of next-generation, IP-based phone systems
for small, large and distributed businesses, announced today that the company
has changed its name to Vertical Communications, Inc. The adjustment reflects
the company's strategic vision to meet the demands of the growing business communications
market. In connection with this name change, the company has changed its website
to www.vertical.com. "The new name more
accurately represents the Company's focus on providing next-generation communications
systems to businesses across several vertical markets, and will also enable the
company to leverage its brand-building investments," said Vertical's chairman
and CEO, William Y. Tauscher. Artisoft is
a leader in IP-PBX software and systems for small businesses. Vertical Networks,
which Artisoft acquired in September of 2004, is a provider of IP-PBX systems
for large, distributed enterprises. The Artisoft acquisition of Vertical Networks
has brought together two IP-PBX companies, with established product offerings
and a significant base of installed customers, under one roof. The new name more
accurately represents Vertical's next-generation, IP-based phone system offerings
and will also enable the company to leverage its brand-building investments. Integrated

mobile computing...should we be worried? Even
though the IT industry buzzes with talk of the wonders of wireless technology,
mobile computing isn't going to replace the corporate desktop anytime soon. However,
that doesn't mean your organisation shouldn't start preparing to embrace elements
of wireless technology. For
example, personal digital assistants (PDAs) are among the hottest and most requested
services among busy executives. While these devices do help boost productivity,
they also introduce a significant - but managable - risk to the security of any
nework. The
most common PDA's run Palm OS, Microsoft Windows CE and Java-compatible platforms.
But unlike earlier PDAs, these devices do more than just take notes; they also
provide wireless links to office e-mail and file servers, making your corporate
data all the more vulnerable.
Unfortunately,
many organisations overlook this growing vulnerability. It's important to be aware
that attackers have written and deployed several hacks and viruses to take advantage
of the general lack of security measures implemented during the deployment of
the devices. Contact
Integrated Solutions for further information on how your organisation can lock
down its mobile devices against would-be attackers. |

biggers & paisley and winscribe
Sydney based law firm, Colin Biggers &
Paisley implements WinScribe as their digital dictation solution. Following a
successful trial implemented by WinScribe across the Commercial, Insurance and
Property sections of the firm, Colin Biggers & Paisley will begin rolling
out WinScribe to the remaining lawyers in the firm. Colin
Biggers & Paisley specialises in various areas of law and is a founding member
of ADVOC Asia. With a commitment to quality cost-effective service, CBP looked
to a digital dictation solution that would increase effciency throughout the firm
and produce an achieveable return on investment. With
close to 80 fee-earners, Colin Biggers & Paisley have recently completed Stage
1 of the rollout to their Property department and will gradually phase in WinScribe
throughout the year to the remaining departments. WinScribe's
open standards based technology has allowed the lawyers at Colin Biggers &
Paisley to dictate using a selection of input devices. During the pilot, CBP elected
to trial both a portable hand held device and a tethered device for dictation
purposes. Following the completion of the trial, CBP decided to use the Philips
Speechmike Classic (tethered unit) as their preferred recording device, due to
the simplicity of use, but have also opted to use the Philips DPM9450 Voice Control
unit as a portable device in a pool environment, to cater for remote dictation
whilst away from the office and if the need arises to also cater for dictation
recording from home. WinScribe's flexible
software feature set makes it easy to administer. This has given CBP's internal
IT department the added advantage of being able to manage rollout procedures with
minimal assistance from WinScribe, further reducing costs. Call

Voice
over IP...the hype and the reality... what's in it for you??? If
you've never heard of VoIP, get ready to change the way you think about long-distance
phone calls. VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, is a method for taking
analogue audio signals, like the kind you hear when you talk on the phone, and
turning them into digital data that can be transmitted over the internet. How
is this useful? VoIP can turn a standard internet connection into a way to place
free phone calls. The practical upshot of this is that by using some of
the free VoIP software that is available to make internet phone calls, you are
bypassing the phone company (and its charges) entirely. Voice
over IP is also available as a feature add on with modern PABX systems, enabling
savings for businesses while maintaining a single phone on the desk. It can also
enable physically remote users to appear as if in the office while saving on office
space.
Integrated
Solutions recommends Televantage, a software PABX capable of providing VoIP and
other features, while being very user friendly. For

central
locking for your pc
There
was a time in the dim and distant past when central locking for your car was the
height of cool technology. Well, now it's pretty standard, so some clever character
has come up with the ultimate in super-cool security for your computer that works
in a similar, but more automatic way. Central Locking
for your PC is the latest 'must-have' security device for anybody who doesn't
want other people prying into their computer. Simply plug
the USB dongle into your USB port, and whenever you move more than about two metres
away from your computer (whilst carrying your 'remote' clicker), your computer
automatically locks itself! When you get back to within two metres of your computer
it unlocks again. Now you need never worry again that
someone could be sniffing about in your computer when you're away from your desk.
You never have to remember to 'log out' again - it's fully automatic. And if you
forget your clicker (because you left it in the kitchen while you were making
coffee for instance) you can get back in using a password.
This is possibly the coolest bit of computer security we've ever seen, and the
remote even looks pretty damn sexy. | | |
